Description
"The play is set in the countryside. It is very quiet. The kind of silence that you can't hear anything over. The kind of silence that makes the world feel like it's turning too fast under your feet."
An old farm, somewhere in a desolate landscape. Two sisters, Becky and Anna, look after the few remaining sheep. The farm hasn’t been profitable for a long time. Their brother Ben has disappeared. Their mother, father, and grandfather are dead. There’s no money to repair the house or care for the sick sheep. The pub has closed, and there are no neighbors left. Becky and Anna keep going—not out of conviction, but because there’s no alternative.
Like a ghost, a stranger appears at the farm, and suddenly, something seems possible: friendship, meaningful work, maybe even solidarity. And suddenly, Ben and their grandfather are back too. But no matter which way time turns, life remains a tightrope walk between hope and loss.
In his uniquely bittersweet style, Scottish playwright Simon Longman portrays young people without prospects—who see that their efforts lead nowhere, yet keep going until the great storm comes. Elise Schmit has translated the text into Luxembourgish, uncovering unexpectedly poetic moments within its stark reality.
